To test the mechanical systems there are no special tools required, just the normal tools that any mechanic should possess such as a multi meter, preferably a digital multi meter, a circuit probe, and some jumper wires.
This book covers both the Resume and Non Resume systems and also the system as it applies to Diesel engine vehicles. With this book and some patience almost anyone can repair and troubleshoot these systems, including rebuilding the cruise transducers.
There are six sections to the book.
Section I covers the Non Resume type cruise control system as it was used on GM and other vehicles from 1968 to 1980. It covers the basic description and operation, followed by electrical and vacuum operations, systems diagnostics and service, electrical and vacuum schematics and finally a combined electrical and vacuum schematic.
Section II covers the Resume type cruise system as it applied to models sold from 1981 to 1983 vehicles. It includes the updated components, diagnostics and testing of same. In this section figure 2-3a shows you the part you should not adjust or tamper with when field rebuilding the cruise transducer.
Section III covers the Aspirator assisted Vacuum system that applied to the J car line.
Section IV covers the vacuum assisted systems
Section V covers the Diesel transducer Non resume and Resume systems identification and diagnostics.
Section VI covers the early Electronic cruise systems K 34 as used on the Cadillac vehicle line.

These books are easy to understand, and applicable to a single subject. The book information is more in depth than even their own service manuals. The books include the original mechanic's notes and we strongly suggest that you read those notes with great care!
